Indian Army has released the names of all 15 soldiers who sacrificed their lives, while protecting motherland, in two separate avalanches in Gurez and Sonmarg hours before Republic Day. NationalDefence has accessed four pictures of the avalanche hit Gurez sector.
Major Amit Sagar, Nb Sub Aram Singh Gurjar, Havildar Vijar Kumar Shukla, Naik Ajit Singh, Sepoys Anand Gawai, Azad Singh, Devander Kumar Soni, Elaverson B, Nagaraju Mamidi, Sandeep Kumar, Sanju Suresh Khandare, Samundare Vikas, Sundar Pandi, Sunil Patel and CFN Ankur Singh are those who died in the natural calamity.
“An avalanche struck an Army camp in Gurez sector of J&K on 25 January 2017. Rescue operation were immediately launched in extreme weather bad weather and heavy snow fall. The search operation enable rescue of one JCO and six soldiers while bodies of the three soldiers could only be retrieved today morning”, Northern Command of Indian Army said in a statement issued earlier on 26th January while India was celebrating 68th Republic Day.
“In another avalanche in the same area yesterday, one army patrol moving towards the post went missing. The area continues to receive heavy snow fall. Braving inhospitable weather conditions, coordinated rescue operations are in progress in which three bodies could be recovered so far. Search operation continues”, the statement read further.
Indian Army on third day of the avalanche hit successfully retrieved all dead bodies despite the harsh weather conditions. “The Indian Army rescue team could not sleep for almost three days for ongoing rescue operation”, said an Indian Army source. Indian Army soldiers are trained hard for such eventualities.
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar expressed grief and condolences to families of Armymen who lost their lives in avalanche in J&K.
Indian Army is making arrangements to send the bodies to the next of kins of the martyrs for the last rites.
"The weather in Gurez and Sonamarg area remained packed up today; therefore mortal remains of our martyrs could not be airlifted to Srinagar. Subject to fair weather, all our martyrs will be transported in helicopters from Gurez and Sonamarg to Srinagar tomorrow".
"Subsequent transportation from Srinagar to Delhi and further to respective native places by IAF fixed wing aircrafts are planned for 29 January (Sunday)".
On Friday evening, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar in Goa reportedly said that "with regards to our soldiers martyred in avalanche, I have asked DRDO to prepare a report. There are cracks on far off posts in glaciers due to global warming; We are exploring options if such post can be monitored from a distance". (updated)
