IAF Inducts Desi AEW&CS Developed by DRDO | Induction At Aero India 2017

NationalDefence Bureau,
Bangaluru, 15 February 2017
Indian Air Force (IAF) on 14 February inducted its first desi Airborne Early Warning & Control System (AEW&CS) developed by the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) at Yelahanka Air base in Bengaluru. DG DRDO, S. Christopher handed over the key to the RM Manohar Parrikar. Raksha Mantri Parrikar after the induction inspected the Emb-145 platform from inside. Speaking exclusively to NationalDefence, Manohar Parrikar praised the efforts of DRDO scientists.

He said that, "the capability was not existing with many countries; hardly 3-4 countries had that ability. Now, India is joining that club". "With this knowledge we can make the complete 360 degree AEW&CS. This is basically 240 degree. It is not all circular so there are some blind spots. The plane has to be reoriented to get on the coverage", Parrikar explained. "But with AEW&CS, we can get all 360 degree. With this experience, knowledge, they can built our own", he added.

RM hoped that the indigenous capability can be enhanced in next 5-6 years and then India can export AEW&CS also.

S. Christophe, DG DRDO said that the feat could become possible because of RM's support. It is a joint effort of both IAF and DRDO. He said that now on DRDO will strive for longer endurance and higher 400 km range AEW&C aircraft.

The Airborne Surveillance System is a game changer in air warfare. The AEW&C System is a system of systems populated with state-of-the art Active Electronically Scanned Radar, Secondary Surveillance Radar, Electronic and Communication Counter Measures, LOS (Line of Sight) and beyond LOS data link, voice communication system and self protection suite, built on an Emb-145 platform, having an air to air refueling capability to enhance surveillance time.

A Complex tactical software has been developed for fusion of information from the sensors, to provide the air situation picture along with intelligence to handle identification/classification threat assessment. Battle management functions are built in house to work as a network centric system of Integrated Air Command & Control System (IACCS) node.

This system has been developed and evaluated through collaborative efforts between DRDO and the IAF, with coordination for certification clearance and quality assurance by CEMILAC and DGAQA. The AEW&C system has undergone all weather and environmental trials and has been accepted by the IAF for induction.

Suma Vergese, Project director, DRDO explained various systems of the AEW&CS to NationaalDefence and said that it will help help Indian Air Force in Network Centric Operations and can guide our interceptors through the targets and get it back on guidance by recovery.
