China- Nepal First Joint Military Exercise Begins Today

The Nepal-China joint training 'Sagarmatha Friendship-2017',
a combined joint training between People's Liberation Army (PLA) and Nepalese
Army (NA) commenced at Special Forces Brigade, Maharajgunj, Kathmandu on April
16, 2017.
Delivering the opening remarks, the chief guest of the
opening ceremony Director General of Military Operations (DGMO), Major General
Binod Kumar Shrestha said ' the aim of this exercise is to promote military
relations and enhance interoperability between Nepalese and Chinese special
forces at functional level by placing emphasis on counter terrorism tactics,
techniques and procedures'. He added 'Chinese army is widely acknowledged for
its professionalism, dedication and combat experience while Nepalese Army has
gained many valuable lesson during its successful counter insurgency campaign
in recent past and has a wealth of experience worth sharing.' He expressed his
confidence that the joint training will prove to be a great platform to learn
and share each other's knowledge and experiences.
Head of Directing Panel of PLA, Colonel YANG Shumeng, while
delivered his remarks, siad 'the cooperation between CPLA and Nepalese Army in
dealing with the threat of terrorism serves the common interest of both
countries.' He believed that the joint training will enhance the mutual trust
and confidence between two armies and promote bilateral cooperation.
At the beginning of the ceremony, Special Forces brigade
commander Brigadier General Babu Krishna Karki welcomed all the participants.
The 10-day joint training, first of its kind, will focus on
the tactics of counter insurgency and counter terrorism.
General Officers of NA, defense Attaché of China, officers
of NA, instructors and participants from both the countries among others were
present during the opening ceremony.
