NationalDefence Bureau,
New Delhi, 24 January 2017
Pakistan on Tuesday claimed to have successfully conducted first flight test of Surface to Surface Ballistic Missile ABABEEL, which has a Range of 2200 Km. "COAS congrats team and Pak Armed Forces for landmark achievement" ISPR DG Asif Ghafoor tweeted after the test.

The press release by ISPR said that the missile is capable of delivering multiple warheads, using Multiple Independent Reentry Vehicle (MIRV) technology. The test flight was aimed at validating various design and technical parameters of the weapon system.

Ababeel is capable of carrying nuclear warheads and has capability to engage multiple targets with high precision defeating the enemy's hostile radar.

"Development of Ababeel missile is to ensure the survivability of Pakistan's ballistic missiles in the growing regional Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) systems. This will further increase the deterrance", ISPR said in the release.

Pakistan as recently as on December 15th claimed to have test fired Babur cruise missile. However, Indian media discredited Pakistan claiming it to be a fake test.

It is important to understand that Pakistan has conducted the SSM missile test at a time when India is celebrating 68th Republic Day on 26th January, just a day later. It is to be seen how India officially reacts to the Pakistan missile test.
