Demarche to China On Maulana Masood Azhar Issue: MEA Spokesperson

Key highlights of the press briefing on 09 February 2017 by MEA Spokesperson Vikas Swarup: 

Proposal to declare and ban Maulana Masood Azhar as International terrorist was not moved by India. The proposal was put forth by three permanent member of UN security council USA, UK and France. It was our understanding that this was the classic counter terrorist proposal meant to proscribe dreaded terrorist Maulana Masood Azhar. whose organisation, Jaish-e-Mohammad already been proscribed by 1267 committee. We don't view this as a bilateral matter between India and Pakistan but as a issue of global counter terrorism. We hope eventually China will also come around to accepting this view obviously if there is a change in Chinese position, there will be consensus also. We have taken up the matter both in New Delhi, with Chinese ambassador, I understand the similar demarche made in Beijing. 

MEA spokesperson, Vikas Swarup clarified that barring China and including Russia all other members supported the proposal. 

Vikas Swarup termed the rumor of a secret nuclear city in Karnataka as complete figment of imagination as diversionary tactics.

MEA has taken conginsance and working with Chinese Embassy in New Delhi and Indian Embassy to China to ensure the visit of Wang Qi, POW of 1962 war. Spokesperson said his China visit is imminent. There is no technical hitch the process.

State terrorism by Pakistan stood in the way of dialogue. 

We have rejected US commission on international religious freedom annual report. we have serious doubts on their credibility. Government does not see locus standi of a foreign entity like the USCIRF to pronounce on the Indian citizen's constitutionally protected rights. We take no cognisance of their report. 

PM is not attending event on 15 February on Afghanistan in Russia. Instead, team will be lead by Join Secretary PAI Gopal.

Qatar mercy petition processed.
