Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will be the new Defence Minister of India. President, Pranab Mukherjee, has accepted the resignation of Manohar Parrikar, who will take oath as Chief Minister of Goa on Tuesday, 14 March, at 5 pm.
A press comunique issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan reads, "The President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, has accepted the resignation of Shri Manohar Parrikar, from the Council of Ministers, with immediate effect, under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution".
"Further, as advised by the Prime Minister, the President has directed that Shri Arun Jaitely, Cabinet Minister, shall be assigned the charge of the Ministry of Defence, in addition to his existing portfolios".
Arun Jaitley earlier was the Defence Minister (Raksha Mantri) for a short period during 26 May 2014 – 9 November 2014
